  • New In!

We are now stocking a range of Klean Kanteen reusable bottles and food boxes. They are made from food grade (18/8) stainless steel, are chip proof, BPA free, don't impart any flavours or smells and are much better for our health and the planet's health than plastic! The range include, baby bottles, sippy bottles, kids bottles, adult bottles and food canisters and boxes and come in insulated and non insulated versions. As a family we have used the bottles for a couple of years and they are still as good as new - despite being put to the test daily by 2 young children!

  • Teabags and Microplastic

A few years back I was reading an article about teabags and microplastic. Yes, the bags themselves can shed billions of particles of microplastics. The Journal of Environmental Science & Technology published an article showing “that steeping a single plastic teabag at brewing temperature (95 °C) releases approximately 11.6 billion microplastics and 3.1 billion nanoplastics into a single cup”. Shocking right! https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.est.9b02540. Polypropylene is often used to seal teabags to stop them from falling apart. As it isn’t compostable or biodegradable, it can lead to plastic pollution as it won’t be broken down. Like most plastics, polypropylene is a known endocrine disruptor. A quick google search will bring up a lot of published information about the range of health issues (some chronic) which can stem from endocrine disruptors. https://chemicals.news/2017-11-30-polypropylene-toxicity-si…. So… take a close look at the packaging information on a range of teabags - is the bag made of plastic? or is a bioplastic used to seal the bag? do you want to drink plastic in your tea or go for a zero waste, plastic-free option? Why not browse through our range of loose-leaf teas, loose leaf tea infuser and reusable cotton tea bags! Our teas are Organic and Biodynamic meaning they are also free from pesticides and herbicides etc. Also, I would recommend using a stainless-steel infuser / strainer or reusable cotton tea bag rather than a plastic one for the reasons above. A good stainless-steel infuser / strainer should last for decades. If it starts to get stained by the tea, just pop some baking soda and vinegar onto it and give it a good rub. It will come back to it's original sparkling self in no time. #zerowastebulkfoods #zerowastehorsham #zerowastesussex#plasticfreehorsham #plasticfreesussex #horsham #ecogift#looseleaftea #plasticfreetea #loosetea #looseleaf #earlgrey#englishbreakfast #chai #greentea #darjeeling #rooibos#biodegradable #compostable #zerowaste #zerowastejourney#zerowastegoals #plasticfreejourney #plasticfreegoals#supportsmallbusinesses #loopgeneration #actnow#oneswapatatime #zerowastetips

  • Red Foods, Antioxidants, New Stock and Stock Replenishment!!

This week the focus is on red foods. Why? Well they are usually packed with natural antioxidants. Antioxidants help prevent or slow damage to cells caused by free radicals. Free radicals are associated with oxidative stress which can cause inflammation. Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between the production of free radicals and a cell’s ability to detoxify them, leading to cellular damage. Along with blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, plums, organs, red grapes, cherries, kale, spinach, brussels sprouts, alfafa spouts, broccoli flowers, beetroot, red bell peppers, onion, sweetcorn and aubergines, the below foods are also high in antioxidants. Red Rice Dried Cranberries Red Quinoa Red Kidney Beans Prunes Raisins Dark Chocolate Pecans Last week saw most product lines partially or completely depleted – we had a huge surge in orders and so did our wholesale companies – they stopped taking orders for 2 weeks to catch up on their own backlog. In the past week we have had 3 stock deliveries and almost everything is back in stock along with some new lines. Thanks for your patience this week! New In: Organic Brown Jasmine Rice Organic Brewers Yeast Organic Self-Raising White Flour Organic Traditional Plain White Flour Organic Pot Barley Pearl Barley Granola with Barley and Coconut (this is different to the granola previously stocked) Organic Classic Muesli As always, free delivery to Southwater with no minimum spend and free delivery to Horsham and many surrounding villages with a £20 spend. See the delivery page for full details. Thanks for reading and please keep safe! • Coffee and chocolate lovers please read on!

We are very happy to add new product lines this week from two local artisans. Sourcing locally is really important to us and we would love to expand our range – please contact us if you make products that you think would fit our ethos! By sourcing locally, we not only leave a better footprint on the environment by reducing fuel emissions and energy usage, but we can also directly support the local economy. This week we picked up some amazing product lines from coffee connoisseurs Horsham Coffee Roaster and the chocolatiers Cocoa Loco. Both companies are strong supporters of the communities that source from and have made positive impacts on the lives of people in those communities. We love that Horsham Coffee Roaster share our passion for the environment and are strong believers in the 3Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle. This week we picked a range of freshly roasted beans from Rwanda, Kenya and Columbia. They taste fantastic and are ready to be ground, brewed and enjoyed! Check out this section of our website for more details www.zerowastebulkfoods.co.uk/coffee-tea We were also really excited to pick up a delicious range from the Horsham chocolatiers Cocoa Loco. We have milk and dark chocolate buttons, hot chocolate spoons and milk chocolate (actual chocolate) drinking flakes in stock as of today! • Orders and Immune Boosting Sauerkraut Recipe

Wow, what a week this has been. I’ve been shocked going into the supermarket last week to get my weekly shop. I’ve had a huge surge in orders this week - my wholesale suppliers have been working around the clock to keep up with orders from smaller retail businesses like me and I will be replenishing stock that is running low this week. If you are self-isolating as you have symptoms, please let me know and I will be happy to deliver but will leave on your doorstep. I will text you when I am there. Also, if you are self-isolating because you are at risk and would prefer me to leave on the doorstep, please just let me know and again I’ll be happy to do so and can call or text when I have delivered. I can’t however take responsibility for any goods that are left on the doorstep. If you have elderly family or neighbours who aren’t able to access online shopping, please do ask them to call me if they want to place an order - I am happy to accept cash, cheques, bank transfer – any payment method. Other news: 1. ***EDIT*** My wholesaler as temporarily disabled any more orders from 8.45pm on 17th March so I cannot order in any more at the moment. If you would like to place an order for any in the future, please send me an email and I will be happy to add onto my next order.*** I will be placing an order by Wednesday 18th March with one of my suppliers. If anyone would like to buy cleaning liquids in 5 litre containers – hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, laundry liquid, toilet cleaner, all-purpose cleaner etc, then please head to the bulk liquids price list on the website to look at what is on offer https://www.zerowastebulkfoods.co.uk/bulk-liquids-list. Please email me with your order as you won’t be able to order through the website (I will take the page down on Wednesday night as this is a one off as I don’t have space to buy these in bulk). 2. New in this week by several requests – organic pitted prunes, organic chopped apricots, non-organic whole apricots and organic wholewheat tagliatelle. 3. Finally, with potential extra time on our hands and everyone in need of immune boosting foods, here is a great sauerkraut recipe! Sauerkraut is so, so easy to make and it is really great for your immune system. Why? Because it contains millions of beneficial bacteria that support the lining of our gut – and the strength of our immune system actually lies in our gut. The lining of our gut absorbs and transports nutrients across the intestinal wall and is also where the greatest number of immune cells are produced. The good bacteria in sauerkraut pass through our bodies, so it is better to have a little bit often rather than a lot of it infrequently. Using organic ingredients for sauerkraut is really important – we need the bacteria! Also, using locally sourced vegetables is better as the transit time is likely to be less and so more nutrients will be present. I bought my organic veggies from Greener Greens who source their organic food locally – and it comes delivered to my door with a smile on a Friday. Ingredients: 1 organic green / pointed cabbage 2 organic beetroot heads, peel the skin off 2-4cm organic ginger, peeled and grated 1tbsp salt for every 800g of vegetables Method: 1. Peel the outside leaves of the cabbage and put aside – you’ll need these later. 2. Finely chop the cabbage and beetroot – it is really important to keep the width of the veggies the same, so that they ferment at the same speed. 3. Grate the ginger. 4. Add 1 tbsp salt per 800g veggies. It is really important to weigh your veggies as the amount of salt you use is crucial. 5. With clean hands, mix everything together with your hands in a bowl, cover and leave for 1-3 hours on the side. 6. Now you’ll need to massage the veggies for 5 minutes or so. The aim is to extract the liquid. Very soon you’ll have a lovely pool of purple liquid in the bowl. 7. Sterilise a jar and lid – in boiling water ideally 8. Take handfuls of the veggies, squeeze out the liquid (but keep this) and place into the sterilised jar. Keep going until you are about 3 cm from the top. 9. Place the cabbage leaf over the veggies and use a weight – the top of a carrot, a sterilised paper weight etc to hold the cabbage leaf down. 10. Pour the liquid over the top and then loosely place the lid on top. Place the jar on a plate as some liquid will escape. 11. It is important to make sure there aren’t any bits of vegetables on the top of the jar or at the side. EVERYTHING – all of the sliced veggies must be covered with the liquid. 12. Keep the lid on loosely as the veggies will start to ferment and produce a gas. The gas needs to escape. If you screw the lid on tightly the bottle will explode in 24 hours or so. 13. Cover the jar with a tea towel and leave on the counter. 14. Burp the jar every 12 hours or so – just lift the lid slightly to let the gas out and then loosely pop back on. 15. Keep on the side for 4 weeks. 16. If you see any signs of mould, do not eat Mould is usually caused because air has got into it - the vegetables may not have been completely covered in the liquid. 17. After 2-4 weeks (probably 4 weeks in this weather as it takes longer to ferment in the cold), tuck in and enjoy a spoonful with each meal! Thanks, and please keep yourself and the vulnerable safe. Nicky

  • It’s day 1 of Plastic Free July!!

Plastic Free July is an Australian initiative that has taken the world by storm. It was set up in 2011 to work towards a vision of a world free of plastic waste. Every year millions of people take part and end up making permanent changes to the amount of plastic they use in their day to day lives. So, this week, to get you started on your journey, we are giving away a food grade, stainless-steel straw with every order placed from today until 7th July. Just type in “plastic free july” in the ‘add a note’ section on the My Cart page to receive your gift. My whole family love these straws – they can be used for hot or cold drinks, from cocktails, smoothies, milk, carbonated drinks to hot chocolates, frappuccinos and everything in between. The straws are completely reusable and dishwasher safe and completely plastic free, chemical free and BPA free. Say no to single use plastic! Don’t forget to tag us on your social media posts – using #plasticfreejuly and @zerowastebulkfoods ! #zerowastebulkfoods #plasticfreejuly #reusablestraw #stainlesssteelstraw #saynotoplastic #savetheoceans #savetheearth #swapoutplastic #bethechange #sustainableproducts #ecofriendly #zerowastehome #lifewithoutplastic #plasticfree #mindfulliving

  • Compostable Packaging

The past couple of months have been so busy getting lots of orders out across Horsham and our neighbouring villages (thanks to everyone who has shopped with us!) that I had completely forgotten about my little experiment to see whether the 100% plant based, certified home compostable bags would break down in clay soil. Well they have - completely! Back in November last year I buried a clump of about 10-15 of these plastic-free bags, to see what would happen when they were buried in the ground. I didn’t rip them up, I just buried them in scrunched up in a ball. Where I live, the ground is clay based so I really wasn’t sure what would happen. Today it is 6 months since I buried them and there is no sign of the bags at all. I’m not sure at what point they had completely decomposed, as the last photo I took was 3 months ago and they were falling apart then. This has made me so happy – looking back at all of the images of the mounds of plastic bags floating in the ocean and in landfill, some that are decades old, these bags are such a brilliant invention. I’ve been told by a customer that the bags disappear in a hot bin in less than a week and they are certified to disappear in a compost bin in 10-12 weeks. Before composting or burying, please cut off the food labels as these are not compostable. #zerowastebulkfoods #certifiedhomecompostablepackaging#compostablepackaging #biodegradeable #hotbin #compost #claysoil#freelocaldelivery #localdelivery #safedelivery #horsham #sussex#plasticfreejourney #zerowastejourney #plasticfree #zerowaste #picsart

  • Bulk Liquids and Compostable Bags

Bulk Liquids I will be placing a bulk liquid order this week. If you would like to purchase any environmentally friendly recyclable 5 litre bottles of washing up liquid, laundry liquid, fabric conditioner, fabric softener, floor cleaner, toilet cleaner, washing powder, bathroom cleaner, home & garden sanitiser, shampoo, conditioner, handwash or body wash, please take a look at the “Bulk Liquids” pdf at the footer of each page of the website. Just send an email to me at info@zerowastebulkfoods.co.uk by Tuesday 4th Feb and I’ll be able to order in for you. I would recommend either getting a 5-litre pump (also available on the pdf document) or getting some funnels to decant. Compostable Bags Breaking Down Back in November I put our certified home compostable, 100% plant-based bags to the test - could they decompose in the ground? Not everyone has a home compost, so I wanted to find out what would happen if the bags were just buried in the garden, under the grass, in clay soil. I am only 82 days (11 weeks) in and the results are really impressive!
