Pecans are a type of nut produced by the Hickory tree and are native to the USA and Mexico. The original meaning of pecan is “nut that requires a stone to crack.” They belong to the same family as the walnut and have the same distinctive texture and brain-like shape, but a slightly sweeter taste.
Cooking with Pecans
Pecans can be eaten as a snack or used in cakes, pies, cookies and nut butters.
To make some delicious lightly buttered pecans, heat the oven to 180 degrees and roast 225g pecans for 10-15 minutes. Then melt 1 tbsp ghee or coconut oil in a pan, add a pinch of salt, ¼ tsp vanilla extract, ¼ tsp honey, 1 tbsp cinnamon and mix together. Then toss in the roasted pecans and coat. Once cooled, tuck in!
