Maca root, also known as maca or Peruvian ginseng, is a relative of broccoli, cauliflower and kale and is found in the high Andes mountains of Peru. The root looks like a cross between a parsnip and a radish with green leaf tops and has an earthy, nutty taste.

Maca has a malty taste and makes a great addition to porridge, creamy smoothies and energy bites. You can sprinkle on your breakfast cereal, pop a teaspoon into your tea or coffee (or other warm drink), or add a teaspoon or two into a into a baked recipe.

To make a creamy smoothie, try blitzing 250ml milk, 1tbsp ground flaxseed 1tso maca powder, a pinch of cinnamon, 1 pitted medjool date, 1 small rip banana, a handful of spinach and 1 tbsp almond butter. Then sit back and enjoy!
