The word liquorice means 'sweet root' and its use can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where the root was made into a sweet drink for pharaohs! Much of the sweetness in liquorice comes from glycyrrhizin, which has a sweet taste, 30–50 times the sweetness of sugar.
Liquorice grows to about 1 metre and has long, purple / blue flowers with oblong pod fruits.
