Figs are the fruit of the ficus tree, which is part of the mulberry family and native to the Middle East and Mediterranean. They have a unique, sweet taste, soft and chewy texture and are littered with slightly crunchy, edible seeds. Fresh figs are delicate and perishable, so are often dried to preserve them. This produces a sweet and nutritious dried fruit that can be enjoyed all year round. Their natural sweetness meant that, before the days of refined sugars, they were often used as a sweetener.

Dried figs contain an impressive nutritional range, including high levels of protein, carbohydrates, calcium, vitamin K, potassium, iron, and magnesium. In terms of dietary fibre, dried figs have a higher content than any other fruit.

Cooking with Dried Figs

Dried frigs make an excellent addition to salads, or toppings on porridge, yogurt or cereals. They can be used as stuffing, included in dips, used a pizza topping or as part of a kebab. Figs also make great additions to baking – raw energy balls, cakes, granola etc… - just use in place of other dried fruits.

For a delicious olive and fig tapenade, mince 115g figs, ½ cup kalamata olives and ½ cup pimiento-stuff green olives. Add 1 tsp fresh minced rosemary, 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar, and 2 tbsp olive oil and blitz until it has the texture you would like. Then it’s ready to serve as a dip or spread over crostini or crackers.
