Bulgur wheat is a nutritious cereal wholegrain made from dried, cracked wheat. It originated in the Mediterranean thousands of years ago and to this day, it’s a staple ingredient in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine.
Bulgur has a nutty taste, a chewy texture and is excellent at absorbing other flavours. It is quick to prepare and very nutritious – high in fibre, high in protein and packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals. It's consistency is similar to couscous or quinoa when cooked.
Cooking with Bulgur Wheat
You can use bulgur in salads (think tabbouleh) or pilafs, alongside herbs, vegetables, spices and sometimes other grains. It can also be used as a base for breakfast-style porridges with oats, or in soups, stews, chilli and stuffing.
Bulgur can be substituted in almost any recipe that calls for quinoa, couscous or rice.
